The problem

My Asus Maximus VIII Hero Motherboard has a neat Qfan configuration (F6) where you can adjust the fans config by modifying the graph (Temperature X Percentage). It looks good, but it does not work. 99% of the times I tried to change anything there, the computer freezes and I need to reboot the machine.

Also, some options are not available and you can’t set any chassis fan minimum below 60%.

This is a very frustrating problem and it will probably never get fixed. When I was looking for a solution, I found out that many other Asus motherboards have the same problem.

Also, the windows software is not very stable and also causes weird errors and there is no software available on linux.

The solution

At first, I wanted to find out if I could change the config from the EFI shell, but I could not find any information on how to do that.

After a few hours of no solution, I rebooted into the BIOS/UEFI and started looking around. And the perfect solution was right there, under Monitor > Q-Fan Configuration.

Monitor > Q-Fan Configuration
Monitor > Q-Fan Configuration

From there you can set everything possible for each fan, including things not available at the QFan menu. And it won’t freeze.

The first screen shows only the CPU fan.

To configure the Chassis Fans, choose Chassis Fan(s) Configuration

There you can set everything manually as well.

With this I got all my fans to behave always as I wanted.

Cheers!
